Transforming sustainability strategy into action; the chemical industry

Beloff et al. assemble eight chapters by 55 US and Canadian contributors on the problem of how to make the chemical industry sustainable, offering practical methods for achieving this goal. Beginning with an explanation of the environmental program Responsible Care, they discuss important issues and the planning, design, implementation, assessment, and future of sustainable development. The final chapter includes five company case studies. Appendices contain the Responsible Care Global Charter and a directory of standards and organizations. Beloff, Lines, and Tanzil are all members of BRIDGES to Sustainability, a non-profit organization.

ConocoPhillips, Quaker chemical develop strategic alliance

ConocoPhillips Co. has joined forces with Quaker Chemical to offer its Quintolubric 814 universal longwall mining fluids to underground mining customers. ConocoPhillips will now market Quaker's longwall fluid to increase customer options, according to Walt Silveira, director of industrial products for ConocoPhillips Lubricants.

Available in versions for various use concentrations, Quintolubric 814 fluids are translucent amber green solutions containing a dye for easy underground leak detection. Approved by both major longwall manufacturers DBT and Joy Machinery, Quintolubric 814 fluids prevent rust, are compatible with commonly used fluids and are nontoxic to fish. The fluid is readily biodegradable in accordance with ISO 7827, with no bacterial or fungal infestation experienced in 20 years of service.

The organization will center around three distinct markets: publication, packaging and commercial.
