Detection of Neon in Helium, at below 5 ppb

Gow-Mac announces the latest in its series of trace gas analysis application data sheets known as 'Peak to Peak Applied Separation Techniques', describing the detection of neon in helium
Gow-Mac Instrument Company, a leading manufacturer of gas analysis instrumentation and compressed gas handling equipment, announces the latest in its series of trace gas analysis application data sheets known as 'Peak to Peak Applied Separation Techniques', concerning the detection of neon in helium. It has been assumed in the past that, 'If there's hydrogen, there's neon.' Today we offer a more definitive statement, 'We'll show you the neon.' The Gow-Mac patented Discharge Ionisation Detector (DID) and Series 590 Gas Chromatograph, coupled with continuing research and improved instrument and detector design, are providing maximum detectability of permanent gas impurities in helium, including neon. This latest literature furnishes the user with essential information needed to perform trace gas analysis in the field of neon in helium.

The analysis was performed using a primary gas standard containing neon, hydrogen, argon, nitrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in a balance of helium.

Nominal concentrations of all species were 2.5 ppm.

The DID's detection zone has been optimised in order to provide the maximum detectability (lowest LDL) for each species.

The Gow-Mac Series 590 GC with DID detects trace gas impurities in the ppb range.

Common detectable impurities include H2, Ne, Ar, O2, N2, CH4, CO, and CO2.

The GC is well suited for the bulk, specialty and electronic gas industries.

The DID is a concentration-dependent universal detector using non-radioactive ionisation dynamics to detect sample components.

Gow-Mac Instrument Co has been the leading manufacturer of gas chromatographs and GC detectors for over 70 years.

New low cost hand held gas analyser for MAP

Oxybaby M is a new, low cost, fully automatic, hand held gas analyser for Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) from Witt Gas Techniques, the gas safety, control, mixing and analysis equipment supplier
Oxybaby M is a new, low cost, fully automatic, hand held gas analyser for Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) from Witt Gas Techniques, the Warrington based gas safety, control, mixing and analysis equipment supplier. The Oxybaby M has been introduced to provide a mobile unit for those packaging companies who require mobility in their packaging inspection but do not have the need to record measured results and do not have the requirement to export logged data via an interface to a computer, a feature that is supplied as standard on the well established Oxybaby V version. Oxybaby M can be used not only on packaging lines, but in laboratories and stores and is designed to measure the O2 and CO2 content of the smallest individual food packages, such as salami, cheese slices and snacks as well as other food packaging including poultry and salads.

Oxybaby M runs on a re-chargeable battery and measures the O2 and the CO2 concentration using a minimal 6ml gas sample.

All measurements are clearly digitally displayed and all menus are multilingual.

Oxybaby M weighs only 600 grams and includes a built in needle making it easy to use; a needle cover protects the user.

It can be held and operated using one hand and comes supplied in a robust carry case with 2 spare needles, 2 spare filters and a set of 100 rubber seals.

Improving the accuracy of chromatographic analysis

A new 'Gas Station' from Parker Hannifin provides both hydrogen gas and zero grade air for Flame Ionisation Detectors (FIDs) on gas chromatographs
The Process Air and Gas Filtration Division of Parker Hannifin has launched a new 'Gas Station' that provides both hydrogen gas and zero grade air for Flame Ionisation Detectors (FIDs) on Gas Chromatographs. Called FID 2500, the new model has been designed to produce up to 2.5 lpm of hydrocarbon-free air from an existing compressed air supply and 250 cc/min of fuel-grade hydrogen from deionised water. Most importantly, the FID 2500 allows users of gas cylinders to control and automate their gas supplies on site, eliminating the cost and inconvenience of sourcing zero air and hydrogen cylinder gas supplies from external suppliers.

In addition, the FID 2500 gas station can significantly enhance the sensitivity of chromatograph equipment, as zero air purity exceeds that of the cylinder gases with hydrocarbon content being less than 0.05 ppm.

Hydrogen gas is produced in the FID 2500 from deionised water using a Proton Exchange Membrane Cell, while the hydrogen generator uses the principle of electrolytic dissociation of water and hydrogen proton conduction through the membrane.

The hydrogen supply produces 90cc/min of 99.9995% pure hydrogen (UHP grade) at pressures of up to 4.1barg.

Zero air is produced by purifying on-site compressed air to a total hydrocarbon concentration of less than 0.1ppm, again measured as methane.

The zero air produces up to 1,000 cc/min of Zero Grade Air.

The FID 2500 is a complete system with innovative, highly reliable components engineered for easy installation, operation and long-term performance.

Furthermore, the new model features an ergonomic cabinet design, state-of-the-art catalysis module, visual operational status display, exceptional gas purity and automatic water filling for continuous operation.

In addition, the new system offers silent operation and requires minimal operator attention.

The Parker FID Gas Station has been designed and manufactured to meet some of the toughest laboratory standards in the world, including CSA, UL, CE and IEC 1010.

In addition, the unit meets NFPA and OSHA 1910.103 regulations, which govern the storage of hydrogen.

ATEX approval for gas analysis in harsh conditions

Quantitech is delighted to announce that on-line analysers from PMS have received ATEX approval for continuous monitoring at ppm/ppb levels in potentially explosive environments
Quantitech is delighted to announce that on-line analysers from PMS have received ATEX approval for continuous monitoring at ppm/ppb levels in potentially explosive environments. Quantitech Managing Director Keith Golding says 'This approval covers the AirSentry-IMS, ProSentry-IMS, StackMaster-IMS, and IonPro-IMS range of products which are used for ambient, stack and process stream monitoring. The analysers incorporate Ion Mobility Spectrometers which are field-proven, highly selective, and sensitive.

They provide 24-hour unattended, continuous, specific monitoring, detecting real-time concentration fluctuations to ensure maximum efficiency.

On-board analyser 'intelligence' provides for easy, user-friendly operation with accurate, direct, low ppb measurement of vapours or gas.

Analysers are unaffected by changes in temperature and humidity, operating in temperatures from -40 to +50C and within a humidity range of 0-100% RH.

No other analysers can operate continuously under such a wide range of temperature and humidity'.

These analysers are used to monitor for gas-phase contamination, such as ammonia, ammonia-in-hydrocarbon streams, HCl, HF, Cl2, and many others in a wide array of industrial environments.
